About
Ju Bock was born in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, into a family of artisan women. With teachings from her mother, she followed the knitting tradition passed down through generations. It was with this family heritage that, during the pandemic while living in the United States, she acquired a loom, some wool, and online tutorials. In a short time, the occupation became a passion, motivating the artist's deep involvement with the craft. From the careful selection of raw materials to the fully humanized execution of the pieces. Now, in her studio in Portugal, she dedicates herself to the activity full-time.
From the skeins of wool that arrive to start a new piece, the artist uses the ancestral technique of tapestry on a loom, in which the threads, interwoven, form a fabric. Her production is characterized by the use of fringes and macramé stitches. Ju surrenders to intuition during the weaving process, allowing the art to evolve organically as she works. After being inspired about what to make, she chooses the threads, colours, and textures. Next, she puts them together and without any drawing, starts building the piece. Each work is executed in a fully humanized way and translates into the unique expression of her artistic vision.
Organic Creative Process and Ancestral Techniques
The work, 'Roots', awakened in the artist the desire to seek raw materials originating from Southern Brazil, honouring her roots. The wools used come from Fios da Fazenda, a family farm in the city of São Pedro do Sul which makes fibers from sheep raised with the principle that "only happy sheep produce quality wool". These animals live in natural pastures, in perfect harmony with nature. The fiber dyeing occurs through pigments extracted from native plants of Rio Grande do Sul, such as carqueja and mate herb, minimizing environmental impact, promoting the practice of renewable resources, and valuing regional knowledge.
